Sight Word Activities for Parents – Learning to Read Games

Sight words are an important part of a child’s reading development.  There are many ways that parents can help their children learn them. Here are some sight word activities that parents can do with their children to help them learn these important words:

Read Books Together

Read books together that focus on sight words. There are many books available specifically for teaching sight words and reading these with your child can be a great way to help them learn.

Play Games

Play games that focus on sight words. There are many online and offline games available that can help children learn sight words. Playing these with your child can be a fun and effective way to help them memorize these important words.

Make Flashcards

Make flashcards of sight words. Flashcards can be a great way for children to practice sight words, and they can be made easily at home. Write each sight word on its own flashcard, and then help your child practice reading them.  EXTENSION: have your child draw a picture on the back of the flash card that represents the meaning of that word to them.

For an additional CHALLENGE to parents and child: show your child the word on the flash card by ‘seconds’, to equal the number of letters in the word. As an example, for the word ‘by’, flash it for 2 seconds only and then put that flash card out of view from your child.  Ask the following: “what letters did you see in the word starting with the first letter and finishing with the last letter.”  It is very important for your child to ‘image’ the letters in order of the spelling.  Secondly, ask them, “what is the first letter you see? What is the last letter you see?  What is the second letter you see?”

The idea is to have your child practice ‘imaging’ out of order. Lastly, ask them to “repeat the letters they see, of the word in order and finish by saying the complete word.  This kind of symbol imaging is great for learning sight words as well as developing writing skills.  Yes, parents, you will need to pay attention in this activity for it to be of benefit to your child!

Create Puzzles

Create puzzles with sight words. Cut out each sight word and then have your child put the puzzle together. This can be a fun way for them to learn the words and work on their problem-solving skills.

Help Your Child Write Sentences

Help your child write sentences with sight words. Write a sentence on a piece of paper, and then have your child write it out using the sight words they know. This can help them practice both reading and writing these important words.

By doing some or all these activities with your child, you can help them learn sight words more effectively. These words are an important part of reading development. Helping your child master them can give them a real boost in their reading success!
